Information of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Brussels with the mediation and participation of the President of the EU Council Charles Michel

On April 6, 2022, a meeting between President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan was held in Brussels with the mediation and participation of the President of the European Union (EU) Council Charles Michel.

The meeting was held as a follow-up to the joint meeting of the parties on December 15, 2021, to discuss the situation in the region, including the development of the region in peace, security and stability.

During the meeting, the principles on which Azerbaijan has always advocated in connection with the development of the region in a post-conflict stage, including the issues of full compliance with the provisions of the trilateral statement of November 9/10, 2020, the continuation of humanitarian steps to promote peace and trust between the parties, taking concrete steps for delimitation and demarcation of the borders of the two states, opening of transport and communications, were widely discussed. Following the meeting, the President of the EU Council made a statement. 

During the meeting, the importance of humanitarian measures in terms of promoting peace and trust between the parties, including issues related to missing persons, the importance of demining process, was emphasized. It was also noted that the EU will support humanitarian demining, as well as rehabilitation and reconstruction work carried out in the region.

The Foreign Ministers of the two countries were instructed to start preparation of a peace treaty between the two countries on the basis of an initiative put forward by Azerbaijan a year ago and the basic principles presented by our side some time ago.

The importance of delimitation and demarcation of the border between the two states was emphasized, and in this regard, an agreement was reached on the establishment of a Joint Border Commission by the end of April of this year.

The importance of opening transport and communication routes between the two countries, including railways and highways, was also emphasized. It was reiterated that the EU is ready to support the development of connectivity infrastructure.

Thus, the meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Brussels with the participation of the President of the EU Council is the next important step taken according to the interests of Azerbaijan and to ensure the future development of the region in peace and security.
